Departure Tax Imposed on People Leaving Japan
The Japan government started collecting departure tax from people travelling abroad starting January 7, 2019, in an effort to fund measures to attract inbound tourism. The levy is imposed to all passengers departing Japan regardless of nationality. The collected tax will be allocated to improving travel services, easy access to information about the country’s tourist destinations, and improving tourism resources that will feature unique local culture and natural features.
Japan is expecting more number of foreign tourists aiming to welcome 40 million visitors by 2020.
