After the 64th International Mathematical Olympiad in Japan

Contribution letter from Mr. Yasuaki Asai, who served as the Former Executive Director of the Mathematical Olympiad for many years.

Mathematical Olympiad Foundation
Former Executive Director, Mr. Asai

The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) competition is held annually on a rotating basis among participating countries, and it has been nearly 20 years since the 2003 IMO competition in Japan, and it was proposed at the 2017 IMO competition in Brazil that Japan host the event, and the following year at the IMO Romania competition in July 2018, the 64th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO 2023) was officially decided to be held in Japan.
In April 2017, the IMO Japan Competition Preparatory Committee was formed, and discussions were first held to determine a venue for the Competition. As a result of the discussions, it was decided that the Competition would be held at Makuhari Messe in Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture, because of its convenient access to Narita International Airport and its proximity to Haneda and Tokyo International Airports, although there were other strong candidates such as Fukui Prefecture.
The Chiba Convention Bureau (CCB) offered its full cooperation in holding the convention in Chiba City, which facilitated not only the selection of the convention operator (Nippon Travel Agency Co., Ltd.) but also the provision of meeting rooms during the management discussions and negotiations with the hotel where the competition was to be held.It is no exaggeration to say that the success of the Japan Competition would not have been possible without the generous support of the CCB.
The CCB also provided us with a subsidy for the Japan competitions. The CCB also arranged for 47 volunteers to assist us during the Games, welcoming pleyers from various countries at the airports, helping with the reception at the opening and closing ceremonies, and guiding and assisting at the hotels where they stayed. We would like to express our gratitude to the volunteers for their flexible response on site, which helped to ensure the smooth operation of the Competitions.
The significance of the IMO competition is to discover and nurture young people with outstanding mathematical abilities from around the world. In this respect, the IMO competition was highly evaluated for the 618 participants representing 112 countries and regions, the largest number ever, and for the increased participation of emerging countries such as African nations.
As in previous years, during the competitons, we have provided a place for players to interact with each other separately from the contest, and at this year's Japan Competition, we provided a room where they could relax. We also borrowed the grounds and tennis courts of Kanda University of Interenational Studies near the competition site, where players who wanted to could enjoy playing soccer and tennis.
In addition, six companies, including Gibraltar Life Insurance Company and Fujitsu Limited, exhibited at the booths of the sponsors of the IMO Japan, and many players showed interest in the booths of these world-class companies, spending a dense time between contests and other activities.
One of the main purposes of the IMO Japan is to introduce Japanese culture, and under the theme of “Japanese Culture x Mathematics,” workshops on “Tea Ceremony - Urasenke,” “Furoshiki,” “Mosaic Puzzle,” and “Origami” were held during the competition, which were well received.
As in previous years, the teams were given a two-day excursion after the contest, with the first day spent at Tokyo Disneyland, and the second day visiting NTT and other companies and the Kashiwanoha Campus of the University of Tokyo in Chiba Prefecture, among others. The tour of Japan's leading companies and research institutions seemed to have stimulated the intellectual curiosity of the players.
In addition, after discussing, reviewing, and deciding on contest issues during the first half of the competition (July 2-5), the delegation leaders were given a tour of the famous Naritasan Shinshoji Temple and the Ino Tadataka Memorial Museum in Chiba Prefecture, separately from the players, so that they could experience Japanese cultural assets.
The IMO 2023 Japan Competition ended on schedule with a speech by former Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Keiko Nagaoka at the opening ceremony and a speech by Chiba City Mayor Shunichi Kamiya at the closing ceremony. Although there were concerns about the spread of the new strain of corona, the IMO Japan Congress was held in a time when corona restrictions were loosening both in Japan and around the world, and fortunately none of the players who participated during the Competition were infected with corona.
After the closing ceremony (July 12), a Farewell Party was held at Tokyo Bay Makuhari Hall, providing an opportunity for players from each country to meet each other in the form of a standing buffet party. Participants commented, “It was a wonderful and thoughtful event”. "The hotel (view) and food were excellent.” ”The excursion allowed us to choose the course, which we enjoyed”. The participants gave positive feedbacks such as, “It was a great competition". At the end of the competition, officials from each country expressed their congratulations on the success of the competition, and praised the meticulous handling of the conference management, the competition venue, and the hotels where the participants stayed. The success of the event was due in no small part to the location of Chiba, a city that has achieved a perfect blend of urban and natural beauty. The fact that the Japan Competition was held 20 years ago in the center of Tokyo, while this time it was held in a regional city, shows the possibility of holding the congress in a regional city.
